New Site Officially Released

by skidzTweak 4/12/2009 6:53:00 AM

For the last week, I have not written anything on the blog, mostly because I have been busy working on a new site for Skidz Partz which will replace the blog as well.

This was my first experience with Joomla, PHP, and Apache. In the past all my development has been windows based (C#, ASP.NET, MSSQL). But, being on a budget, and wanting to expand my knowledge of Linux and open source I thought I would give it a try. It was a lot easier than I thought. It took me about 1 week to do everything you see. Joomla made it really easy, so a big hats off to the team that developed it. Its perfect for what I need and I didn't have to spend all the time developing a comprehensive CMS.

Features of the new site:
  • Sign up capabilities
    • Many other features show up when you log in, including rating articles and more
  • Shout box in lower right
    • Chat with others on the site Right Now
  • Comments on all items
    • Have a question or comment on an article?, write it!
  • Polls
    • I don't plan on using this just for cute things, I hope to get insight on directions for products and stories. So your vote does matter.
  • Shopping Cart
    • You can now buy products from Skidz Partz directly here, paying with real money :)

Coming Soon:
  • Forums
  • A lot more stories
  • Submission to articles to other social networks
  • Newsletter signup

The site is better when your're logged in, so sign up today. I don't spam you or sell your info, so no worries there. Be sure to vote as well if you like the new site or not.

Top 10 Disadvantages to Having a Two Sim Place

by skidzTweak 4/3/2009 5:55:00 PM
With Skidz Isle I had the opportunity to build a place in Second Life with two sims, which really was a first for me. While of course this has several advantages, there are also some disadvantages that I didn't foresee, and thought I would share with you all.

So here is my to 10 disadvantages list to having two sims (they get progressively worse):

10. Sounds on my waterfall only happen on one sim and not the other
Because the prim making the sound is all on one side. I could buy a second sound rock, but it's something I can live with.

9. Ugly floor signs that make you aware of the sim crossings
Now this by no means is super necessary when making a two sim place, but it is very helpful to the visitors.

8. The teleport system you implement can only work on one sim at a time
Luckily Skidz Isle has symmetry so it was not that big of issue.

7. Managing the banned users is more difficult
Two sims makes this more difficult to juggle for the volunteers in the sandbox. Not much of a problem if you have estate managers and ban from all regions, but difficult if you don't.

6. Chat does not cross the sim lines
It's amazing how many times I have stood in the lobby, and found out someone was standing on the other sim trying to chat with me.

5. Overall lag did increase slightly
This might be because my draw distance is always turned up to 512, but the client does seem to respond a little slower.

4. Lag caused from crossing the sim
At the beginning, this was super bad. And I mean so bad, it was not doable at all. I had to contact Linden Labs, and they very quickly moved the sim so it was in the same data center.

3. Special care had to be taken when making up the floor so you would not fall through
Under the floor are some huge prims that span the walkable areas. One had to be placed on both sims, just .001 away from the edge to ensure you don't fall through.

2. Traffic is divided up between the two sims and not shared.
This lowers the results in the search of course, and really does stink.

And the number one thing... *starts tapping his desk for the drum roll*

1. The cost is twice as much
Yes, that does really stink... Please help support the sandbox by donating when you can. Any amount would help. :)

Hi All

At Skidz Partz we are working hard on a new site for http://www.skidzpartz.com. On Saturday we are going to be taking a picture for it. The picture will be at the top of every page. I invite anyone that want to join us in the image to come on by. I would think it would not take longer than 15  to 20 minutes to get everyone lined up and a couple pictures snapped.

Did the OpenSim April Fool's Joke go too far?

by skidzTweak 4/1/2009 1:37:00 PM
I've been reading posts in the OpenSim users group all day, and there are some really mad people out there. I personally don't believe it went too far. Why? Because it was only in the development trunk and the people that are mad used it for a production environment (which is not smart). I mean... I would probably do the same thing honestly, but I would be aware of the risks, as well as willing to accept them. If that meant I had to get up at 2 a.m. to patch, I would have accepted that.

Here are some of the comment from the email group... keep in mind, these poured in all day...

Upset comments in the group:

"I want to make sure you understand why my company is now withdrawing our good will and support toward OpenSim, And why we are withdrawing our financial support from several OpenSim Grids we were supporting with our business."

"I just found out our OpenSim-Grid-based project has lost our  funding because of some stunt you assholes pulled in the OpenSim  code.  You are despicable!  There is no possible excuse for what  you have done."

Positive ones (these were a bit harder to find):

"I myself am glad to see the developers do in fact have a playful sense of humor.

This whole situation could have been avoided by simply testing the SVN version before applying it for general use on your grid.

KUDOS to the devs for another fine job... well done.. as usual."

"I enjoyed my new funny look a lot.....    :-)

Besides, I could continue working with no problem (no time lost); fortunately I was not in the middle of a fashion modeling session.

A Little humor now and then can't hurt anyone, even if they have forgotten how to laugh."

Defence from the OpenSim developer that pulled the prank:

"Once again, we warn everyone that Development and testing SVN is not for production.  It is for developers and testers.   This joke was purposely left out of all releases.  Releases are for production.

The best that I can offer you, however, is the assurance that OpenSimulator will follow a predictable course.   A joke in developer's and tester's SVN on April 1, that's very predictable.  A joke in June, not so much..   which is why it won't happen."

Skidz and Alayna are Expecting

by AlaynaHutson 4/1/2009 2:49:00 AM

My neural implant became infected with Skidz Primz about eight minutes ago. Seeing as Skidz poured his blood, sweat, and tears into our original building tool, it's understandable that they are out for revenge. But in their attempt on my neural pathways, they somehow managed to send some of Skidz DNA through the implant.

So now Skidz and I are expecting our first child. Here's a picture I took to show everyone that the baby although strange and part of an immaculate cranial-to-uteran conception, is very healthy. Based on its current development, I would say that I'll be giving birth any moment. And leave it to the father to miss the birth! He's asleep!

Here it comes!

The New Tool Released Today at 4:01 PM SLT!!!!

by AlaynaHutson 4/1/2009 12:05:00 AM

Skidz has decided to release our newest building tool out there TODAY at exactly 4:01 PM SLT/PDT! This is a surprise to even me, since I have not yet been given a copy of the tool so I can start working on product manuals. But Skidz told me that it's not a problem as he's programmed the new tool (which still doesn't have a name) to actually read your mind. However, this will be an add-on you can buy for only US$299.99. This gets you the small, four-pronged unit resembling a spark plug which then gets inserted into the back of your neck, directly into your neural pathways. A USB plug then connects you to the computer, interfaces with the new tool, and it will read your mind.

Although I was seriously skeptical about the whole neural implant concept, Skidz has assured me that there is nothing to be worried about. The only draw back is that the unit cannot be removed, and can interupt your normal sleep patterns. Skidz also mentioned to me that all users that opt for the implant unit must have trusted virus protection. Test subjects are still in the good service of our Great Skidz, and will remain so until the completion of his world domination.

So make sure that you buy your copy of the new tool and write your checks and money orders payable to Skidz Partz. Send your payments with a self-addressed envelope to us:

April Fools On OpenSim

by skidzTweak 3/31/2009 10:04:00 PM
I was just about to turn in for the night, when I checked my email... and in the OpenSim-Users Email group there was an uproar.

Turns out someone played a nice April fools joke on OpenSim users. On April 1st there Avatars stretch out really huge...
Yea.. thats me..

Easiest way to fix it is to change the date. :)

Resident Choice Awards

by skidzTweak 3/31/2009 6:31:00 PM
Resident Choice awards are here! And there is a huge selection of categories.

I am not one to usually toot our horn... But I figure if I want to win I have to :). So I am asking everyone I know, to please go and vote for Skidz Isle. There are several categories I think we might have a chance at.

How to vote?
Go here and answer the 4 simple questions it ask on the first page, on the next page you can then paste (ctrl+v) the SLURL below into the categories. Submit it, and your done.
You will also need this SLURL so copy it (ctrl+c):

Categories I think Skidz Isle would be great for:

Hanging with Friends: I see the same groups of people hanging out here over and over. Skidz Isle provides a very laid back place, with two huge sims wide open to build in, with a team a volunteers that work tirelessly to ensure griefers don't bother anyone. Its the only private sandbox that has a PG rating (I have been told), and we don't restrict access for payment info.

Help Newbies: The Skidz Isle Mentors group is really why I feel Skidz Isle would be great candidate for this category. There is always someone to help out with a scripting question, texture that is needed, or even questions about SL in general.

Wizard Like Scripter: I seen this catagory and got a chill up my spine. I would be so honored if I was voted for this. I know compared to most of the big SL stores out there I don't carry a huge selection of stuff, but the things I do make I feel are unique, creative and well thought out. It would be an overwhelmingly honor if I won this. *almost starts to cry just thinking about what it would be like to win*

Buy Stuff: I admit, Skidz Isle might not be the best place for this category... but I figured why not, I sell stuff.. :) At least I am honest!!

So PLEASE vote for Skidz Isle. Ask your friends to vote for Skidz Isle, send out group notices to vote for skidz Isle, Jump on twitter and tell the world to vote for Skidz Isle, send out one of those really annoying chain letters that threaten bad luck if they don't vote for Skidz Isle... ok.. maybe not that :) ... But please.. do vote for me :)

How to run a serious OpenSim at home Part 5

by skidzTweak 3/29/2009 2:24:00 PM
Today we are taking a big step. We will open our network to allow others to access our OpenSim Grid.

Step 1

If you had not forwarded the ports from your router as we went along, you will need to do this now. Here is a great site that can help as well.

If you have followed along exactly then all your servers, and a couple sims are all set up on the same computer. This is where these ports need to be forwarded too. For my local network my servers are set up on 192.168.1.181.

The ports you need to forward are:
8001 to 8006 & 8895 TCP - These ports are used by the 5 Grid servers (asset, inventory, messaging, etc)
9000 TCP/UDP - This was the first sim you set up

You also need to forward any port number of the sims you made in Part 4.

You can double check your port are open correctly by going to Shields up
When you get there click proceed. Then below where it says "You may select any service from among those listed above . . ." there is a windows form, type in the following "8001, 8002, 8003, 8004, 8006, 9000" and then click "Use specific custom ports probe". All these ports should report open. If one is closed, you might not have your OpenSim servers up and running, or you might have did something wrong in the port forwarding.

Step 2

Do you have a static IP address?
Most people don't, and in that case you would want to set up something like Dynamic DNS Service. This site here claims to give out 5 subdomains for free.

Note: A static IP means that the IP address your internet service provider gives you does not change ever. A Dynamic DNS service would give you a domain that points to your IP address at home, and when that IP address changed, you could go to their site and change it, or some application running at home does it automatically. This allows you to give out the domain that in theory will always point to your home IP address.

If you have a static IP address I suggest you buy a domain at www.GoDaddy.com . You can get a non .com domain for just a few bucks a year. After you buy that domain you need to point it to your static IP address by editing going to there Domain Manager, then to the Total DNS Control.

After you have your domain all set up, try and ping your domain to ensure its pointing to your home IP Address.
Start/Run/cmd/ping YOURDOMAIN.com

If you are having troubles doing this try just pinging your external IP address to ensure it will return pings (some routers won't). If that does not help.. double check all your settings you did in step 2. If all fails then all I can suggest is you might wait a bit, the DNS services might need to propagate your IP to all the servers still, and its ok to move onto step 3.

Step 3

Internal network.

Now that we have the domain name pointing to our home IP address, and the router is forwarding all the ports, we need to make some small changes to our internal network.
On the box that runs the Opensim servers and sims go to the directory "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc" in there is a file named host. Open it with notepad so we can edit it. If no changes have ever been made this this file, then you should see a line like this "127.0.0.1       localhost". Below that line you need to add your external IP address, and then the domain you set up in Step 2. For example, mine looks like this "98.100.106.10   grid.gridaverse.com".

Note: This step should not really be necessary, but I found I was having troubles, and this seemed to help. When you edit the host file, its like writing up your own DNS service for that computer. You could actually put any domain you want to point to any IP you want. Now if someone goes to grid.gridaverse.com on this local computer, they will go to that IP address.

Step 4

We now need to edit the same files we edited in Part 4 of this series
Go to your OpenSim production folder. In the past I have referred to that director as "c:\OpenSimProd".
Open the folder "Regions".
Depending on how many sims you set up in Part 4 there might be more than one file in here.
Each one of these files needs a couple small changes.
Open each up and change the following:

Changes:
internal_ip_address, this need to be changed to the ip address in your internal network. You can get this in windows with Start/run/cmd/ipconfig.. or linux ifconfig.
        Example: internal_ip_address="192.168.1.181"
external_host_name, this needs to be the domain you set up in Step 2.
        Example:external_host_name="grid.gridaverse.com"

Repeat this for each file in your "region" folder.

Step 5

Restart the OpenSim servers with the "quit" command and then start them back up.

Step 6

You need to change your login URL for your grid in your shortcuts, or if you have the hippo viewer in the grid preferences.

For hippo viewer it would look something like this, with your domain instead of mine:
Login URL: http://grid.Gridaverse.com:8002/

For a shortcut to the regular SL client it would look like this:
 -loginuri http://192.168.1.181:8002/

Step 7

Test to see if you can log in.

Hopefully this is going well. If you find your having troubles with logging in on your internal network you could try step 3 on the computer your currently on, but you should not have to if everything is working right.

Step 8

Convince a friend to help out on this part. We need someone on the external network (not at your house) to try and login.

First you need to set up a user for him. Ask your friend what first name, last name, and password they would like. In the User server dos window type the following command:
create user firstname lastname
You will then be prompted for a password. Type that in as well.

Now instruct your friend on how to set up shortcut to your sim, or  using the hippo viewer.

Ask them to login

If they make it... your good to go.. all finsihed..

Step 9

If all is well your done.. if not lets do some troubleshooting...

Double check your router port forwarding and make sure everything is correct.

Ask your friend to ping the domain name you set up in step 2. If he can't reach it for some reason, you could ask him to make the same changes you made on step 3 for his local computer. This could help.

Finish up

This in my mind is the hardest part of setting up the grid. I had all kinds of trouble getting mine to work, but it was a problem with IP tables and rules I set up on my linux router. I ended up ditching my linux router and buying a new one just for this to work, and afterwards it worked great.

In the next part we will look at running additional sims on other computers in your network.
